Bringing a new pet into your home is a very traumatic experience for your pet.
Imagine being taken from a known environment, even though it may be a bad one, and put into an unknown environment, even though it is probably much better. Add the stress of having to adapt to a new routine without being able to easily communicate with the new boss. Finally, remove the ability to reason that the situation will be better in the long run. Now, you have some idea of what your new pet is experiencing.
Whether you adopt from Mutts-n-Stuff, adopt from another rescue group or shelter, or even purchase from a reputable breeder, please give your new pet the time, understanding, and love s/he needs to make the realization that this new situation is a good one.
Since rescue groups mainly get animals from pounds and/or take in strays, it is very important that you give your newly adopted pet extra attention, so that s/he realizes there is no need to hoard and protect her/his resources (i.e. food, treats, toys, humans, space). We highly recommend crate training to give your new pet a “safe place” to go when things get too crazy. This also helps with house-breaking puppies or reinforcing it in dogs.
Once your new pet as acclimated herself/himself to the new environment, you’ll both have many years of happiness, love, and companionship together.
